I like Personal Security Alarms

Posted by Lorraine on October 20th, 2008 filed in self defense products

Personal security alarms are finally making their presence known in the world of self defense products.  Yes, they have always been there, but it seemed that people were more interested in buying a taser or a stun gun – in other words owning a weapon of their own – instead of something like a personal protection alarm.  Critics of safety alarms as a first line self defense product state that they give people the illusion that just setting off an alarm will guarantee that help is on the way.  But I would argue that a woman being threatened by a brace of drunken louts has probably already realized that chivalry is dead.
They’re small, and cheap – a 125db key chain alarm with a flashlight can be had for less than $20.00

Still, one of the huge benefits of a personal security alarm is that it can’t be turned back on you and I think that’s something that a lot of women don’t stop to consider when they stuff a taser into their purse.  If you’re not ready to use it, you had better not bring it out.  We’ll not too many people will be afraid to use their alarm and since its not a totally outside shot that the ear splitting screech of your alarm will throw the drunks off their stride for long enough for you to bolt, I’ll all for them.

I agree that carrying a personal security alarm is better than not carrying anything at all, but I don’t think a personal alarm is superior to pepper spray, a stun gun or taser.

The problem is that for a personal alarm to be effective, you have to rely on other people to come to your rescue, or at least the potential for other people to come to your rescue.

What happens if your attacked in an isolated area where people aren’t likely to hear an alarm? I still think that pepper spray, stun guns and tasers are more effective self defense products than personal alarms.

However, you make a very good point that users of these products have to KNOW HOW TO USE THEM. This comes with practice and being prepared. You certainly wouldn’t want your own self defense product turned against you and used on yourself.
